Installing Printer Sprite/ Printer Squirrel

(This document only applies to Printer Sprite or Printer Squirrel 2.0 and above)

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
In version 2.0 we have radically changed the way logs are recorded. Logging is now performed using a client/server topology where loggs are gathered by the logging client and sent via the network to a logging server. This allows for a great deal of flexibility in logging configurations and also gives the ability to log direct network connected printers easily.

**Important**
Because of these changes logs from older versions of Printer Sprite or Printer Squirrel are not directly readable. However we will offer a conversion process to registered users.
Contact us at support@lygil.com before installing this product if you need this done.
It is advisable to uninstall any previous versions of Printer Sprite before proceeding with this install. (Otherwise you will have 2 seperate loggers running)

How to configure the print logger.

This is an overview of how the print loggers work and how to configure them on a network.

The logger packages (Printer Sprite or Printer Squirrel) consist of two components.

1. The logger server service - which handles all the incoming logs and assigns them to the appropriate virtual printer and the server application itself (Printer Sprite or Printer Squirrel).

2. The logger client service - which logs the printers and sends the logs to the logger server, and a client configuration utility.

Installation steps:

Step 1: Install the logging server on a machine that will not be turned off (although it can be logged off), and is in a convenient place to monitor logs. (PSpritePrinterLogServerSetup.exe or PSquirrelPrinterLogServerSetup.exe)

Step 2: Configure Printer Sprite/Squirrel, adding virtual printers as necessary. See the configuration examples in the help for ideas on the best way to do this.

Step 3: Install the logging clients on the machines that the printers are connected to, either physically or via a direct network connection. (PrinterLogClientSetup.exe)

Step 4: Run the client configuration utility to add printers to be logged and specify virtual printers (these are the ones you set up on the logging server) to send the logs to. Usually you will only log printers listed as 'Local', but the logging client can also log printers listed as 'Network', although there may be access rights issues. The reason for this are: Because the logging client starts as a service, it is logged on with the local machine account which should have administrator rights to local printers, but is unlikely to have administrator rights to network shared printers and so cannot perform logging. The service logon can be changed so that you do have access rights
